We bring modern, evidence-based knowledge about pain closer to individuals, employers, and healthcare professionals
Pain education for organisations and healthcare professionals
Our mission is to bring modern, evidence-based knowledge about pain closer to healthcare professionals, employers, and everyone for whom pain plays an important role in daily life.
“Pain to the crow, illness to the magpie.” – so begins a traditional Estonian healing charm once recited to help a sick child. Interestingly, this old saying also contains a grain of truth from the perspective of modern science: although pain and illness often occur together, in many cases they are no longer directly linked. This is particularly true for persistent pain, where the original injury or tissue damage may have healed, while pain continues due to adaptations within the nervous system. Modern pain science shows that pain is far more complex than was once thought. It is influenced not only by physical changes in the body, but also by a person’s knowledge, experiences, emotions, behaviour, and many other factors.
Pain is one of the leading contributors to the global burden of disease, and the prevalence of persistent pain has continued to rise over the years. (The Lancet, Global Burden of Disease Study). Olgu statistika või igapäevane elu – näeme, et nii valude ennetamine kui ka tõhus ravi valmistavad sageli raskusi.
Valuvares aims to improve people’s ability to manage pain, quality of life, work ability, and health literacy related to pain. Its main target groups are healthcare professionals and organisations. Through education, Valuvares seeks to contribute both to higher-quality pain management and to the prevention of pain in the workplace and in everyday life.
The quality of our training is ensured by:
Evidence-based practice
Valuvares training is grounded in evidence-based information rather than outdated myths or conventional assumptions. For example, common advice such as “sit up straight” or “always lift with a straight back” may no longer reflect current scientific understanding. Our training is based on reliable research and up-to-date international guidelines.
Clinical experience
We combine evidence-based knowledge with real-world clinical experience. Our training uses examples and case studies based on actual patients, situations, and work environments. Real-life examples, practical exercises, and discussions help participants understand how to apply new knowledge in their everyday work.
High level of expertise
To ensure a high standard of training, we place strong emphasis on professional qualifications, teaching experience, and continuous professional development. Academic expertise and international training in pain science help ensure that our content remains evidence-based. Regular participation in scientific conferences, together with ongoing involvement in teaching and research at higher education institutions, helps keep the training current and relevant.
Martin Argus is a physiotherapist, lecturer, research advisor, and educator with nearly 10 years of experience in pain management and physiotherapy. As a physiotherapist, he has worked with a wide range of complex pain conditions and has specialised in work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
In recent years, Martin has worked primarily in academia, teaching pain science at the University of Tartu and serving as a Research Advisor at Tallinn Health University of Applied Sciences. To deepen his understanding of work-related pain and evidence-based approaches to pain management, he completed a PhD at the University of Tartu. His doctoral thesis, defended in 2023, focused on factors contributing to the development of work-related pain. Martin Argus’ CV is available here.
Martin has further developed his expertise internationally, including at Aalborg University in Denmark and through the European Pain Federation (EFIC) Pain School. He regularly participates in international scientific conferences as an attendee, speaker, and workshop facilitator.
Martin has worked as an educator with a wide range of organisations for nearly 10 years, focusing on pain prevention, understanding pain, and practical strategies for managing it. Participant feedback consistently highlights that: Martin encourages people to think differently about pain. His training sessions critically examine common myths such as: "you must always maintain an upright posture while sitting" , "objects must be always lifted with a straight back" or "an office-worker must do specific exercises to prevent pain". In reality, pain is a much more complex phenomenon – and the solutions can be surprisingly simple!
